St. Louis Heroes

A few weeks ago I was invited to the Crusade Against Crime Medal of Valor Awards by my friend Jennifer Jermak.  The purpose of the awards is to honor members of law enforcement in our region for their bravery in the face of danger.  Listening to their heroic stories put into perspective that to make our communities great requires action from those of us who live here.  Now I don’t mean civilians chasing down armed gunmen, but everyday actions that benefit our neighbors and even perfect strangers.

These types of heroes, those who dedicate their time and resources to bettering our community, are plentiful in St. Louis.  This past spring on Living St. Louis, I followed a group of volunteers from Rebuilding Together who spent a weekend repairing an elderly couples home who couldn’t afford to do it themselves.  Local jazz singer, Mae Wheeler, was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer in 2006.  While being treated, she has spent her time raising awareness about the disease, as well as continuing her efforts to raise scholarship money for C average students.  PHL, Inc. is a group of area contractors who have donated their resources to repair and build better athletic facilities for the the Public High School League in St. Louis.

These are just a few examples of how the people of St. Louis make this a great community and place to live.  Let me know if you know any selfless St. Louisans.   I know there are many more out there!
